Summer Academe
The North American Association of Summer Sessions, along with the Association of University Summer Sessions, the North Central Conference on Sumer Sessions, and the Western Association of Summer Session Administrators is pleased to announce that Summer Academe will be published annually in an online format with the first issue of the “renewed” journal expected in early 2012.
Summer Academe: A Journal of Higher Education has provided university and college administrators, deans and directors of summer sessions, and faculty involved in teaching and programming in summer sessions with a source of current research and best practices in summer session administration and pedagogy since 1998. Following a review in 2010 that included a readership survey, the sponsoring associations decided to revise and broaden the mandate of Summer Academe to include features on conference presentations, special topics, and media and book reviews. Research will continue to be an important component of Summer Academe, but the added features are what the readers told us they wanted to see included in the journal.
The new academic editor for Summer Academe is Bill Kops of the University of Manitoba who takes over from the very capable founding editor, David Schjebal. Bill will work with an Editorial Board comprised of representatives of the four co-sponsoring associations:
NAASS – Monique LaRocque, University of Southern Maine
AUSS – Kathleen Micham, UCLA
NCCSS – Jon C. Neidy, Bradley University
WASSA – Kristen Pedersen, Portland State University
While there will be a number of changes, including a redesigned cover and page layout, added features, and publication in an electronic format, we plan to continue the same approach to journal production. Continuing to work with Caddo Gap Press, the editorial board will shortly announce a call for submissions, followed by a review and editing process that will result in the first issue of the renewed journal in early 2012.
Summer Academe welcomes submissions from different viewpoints, methodologies, disciplines, and cultures that focus on summer session administration or pedagogy. Specifically, manuscripts and articles are encouraged that deal with research and scholarship (refereed), reports on innovations and best practice, conference presentations, opinion pieces and commentary (that provide thought provoking perspectives on critical issues, policies, and contemporary events), and band media reviews.
